CHILDREN and young people will be spoilt for choice next week with events lined up as part of National Play Day.

As part of Cotswold District Council’s extensive Summer off the Streets activity programme, Cotswold District Council has teamed up with New Brewery Arts and World Jungle to stage two free events for children and young people to celebrate National Play Day on Wednesday, August 4.

The events will be free of charge and require no pre-booking. In Cirencester, there will be a wide range of creative activities on offer at the New Brewery Arts Centre, including clay and junk modelling, storytelling sessions, and other imaginative and artistic fun events. The day begins with an opening ceremony at 11 am performed by Tiptop the Tiger, who will be entertaining the children and releasing balloons.

The fun continues at the Arts Centre until 4 pm, and children under 16 will also be given a free pass to use the Cirencester Open Air pool from 2-4pm for a Playday ‘splashabout’ session.

More events are planned at the Baden Powell Centre in Chipping Campden from 1-5pm. World Jungle has activities including circus skills, DJ-ing and MC-ing, African drumming, skateboard tuition, henna tattoos, and other games and crafts. CDC’s Summer off the Streets organiser Gaynor Harper said: "With so many families feeling the pinch at the moment, it’s wonderful to be able to provide a free fun day for children thanks to the funding provided by the Big Lottery Fund.

"Others have chipped in as well, including the Cirencester Party Shop which is hiring out Tiptop’s costume free of charge. "The theme for the day this year is ‘Our Place’ and we have worked hard to involve youngsters in the preparation and delivery of the events.

"Children playing – being seen and heard – is one of the things that helps create vibrant communities. Both events promise to be great occasions which should stimulate the kids and, hopefully, wear them out a bit as well."

More events are planned throughout the summer holidays in locations around the Cotswolds.
